The HUMANISTEN PROJECT according to the architect

The aim of the Humanisten Project has been to gather all the art institutions into one facility in Renströmsparken and to create a larger space for meetings, self-studies or group studies in an open plan context in a new study landscape.

Renströmsparken is a beautiful park area in central Gothenburg, which is defined by brick buildings from various eras, a mountain to the south and Näckrosdammen to the west. A new main entrance will be placed here, on the site of the "Minneshallen"from the 1923 Wold Exhibition, and somewhat higher in relation to the surroundings as a conclusion to the park area’s grass embankment to the south. A building that in scale links to the existing building and with an entrance space and an external arcade in two floors, which clearly manifests Humanisten.

The varied study landscape in several floors is located on the border between new and existing buildings. A new "heart" in the facility, where students, lecturers, researchers and the public can meet, study or partake of lectures. The central space in the study landscape is a "stairwell" with tiered seating and stairs on several planes, which forms an extension of the rock face in which the building is inserted. Coupled to the study landscape are lecture halls, case rooms, group rooms, auditoriums and a drama hall.

The institution’s wings in the existing Humanisten are coupled together with new link buildings to increase the number of study rooms and meeting rooms. This creates circulation and flexibility for the institution’s activities. Even the existing Språkskrapan is being coupled to the facility through two floors being directly connected to the west of the new build.
